“You must have a digital identity. If you don’t have this in mind, you are irrelevant.” And such is how Director of Emerging Products at Google, Bernardo Hernández, began his presentation at ExpoManagement Madrid 2012, leaving it clear that it is essential to stay up to date on new technologies that are directing the future of business.
According to Hernández, we have left the Industrial Revolution and are already entering the Digital Revolution. “We are not prepared to understand the consequences, because the changes are each day faster,” Hernández explained. So, how can we adapt to what’s to come and stay relevant? In the following we share with you some of his most important tips on how to do so.

-30% of the global population is connected to the Internet
-70% of the global population will be connected in 2020
-By 2020, available information will be 67 times what it is today
-16% of Google searches are new ones. Maybe your business will appear in the next search?
-10 billion mobile phones will exist in the next 10 years. “The new paradigm is to understand mobile internet.”
How to stay relevant in this global context?
-Maintain an identity online. Did you know that 90% of small and medium-sized business in Spain don’t have a website?
-Become friendly with social media. Have in mind that social media isn’t just another channel, it should be the vertebrae of your marketing strategy.
-Not one business model will escape the digital revolution. And as such, you must understand how it will change your industry in order to maintain relevancy. The way we buy, interact, read, communicate…it’s all changed. How will this affect your industry?
-Change also means adapting. And having the ability to do things more efficiently with less cost and more value.
-Educate yourself on technology! Your prepartion and that of those in your company is fundamental in order to be able to take advantage of the digital revolution. It is a constant learning process!
-Attention: machines will not replace human jobs. Job titles will change, and it is the responsibilty of all of us to make that happen.
-One of the most crucial problems of the future will be managing so much available information. Learn how to find information and share it in the best way. Google has developed applications to make this process easier.
-Marketing and new finances: Don’t lose an opportunity today to use technology to better understand the profile of your client. Today you can segment them, pay only for the information that serves you, and have control… if you learn how to use technology.
-Don’t forget about your online reputation. This can have a direct impact on your products. If you want to effect what they say about you…you need to do authentically, and, if you don’t want anyone to find out about it…don’t do it!
